PAG XXI (Plant and Animal Genome Conference) Update: The PAG XXI and NRSP-8 Aquaculture Genome Workshop are around the corner. The PAG meetings will be January 12-16, 2013, in San Diego. Speakers include Eric Perakslis (US FDA), Michael Eisen (UC Berkeley), Daniel Chourrout (Sars Centre, Norway), Greger Larson (Durham U.), Steve Jacobsen (UCLA), Goncalo Abecasis (U. of Michigan), Michele Morgante (U. of Udine, Italy) and Gary Muehlbauer (U. of Minnesota), see the program at http://www.intlpag.org.

The Aquaculture Genome Workshop Update: The Aquaculture Genome Workshop will be a one and a half days long event starting Saturday January 12 and ending at 12:30 on Sunday January 13. We are looking forward to another exciting and productive Aquaculture Workshop at PAG XXI in San Diego. This year's Sat/Sun workshop will focus on gleaning high-quality expression and genotypic data from the next-generation sequencing data deluge and how to integrate that information into progress in the research and production arenas. Our plenary speakers this year include: Patrick S. Schnable, Iowa State University, W039 - NGS-Enabled Research Tools for Crops and Livestock; Daniel F. Carlson, Recombinetics, Inc. W043 - TALEN-mediated gene editing in terrestrial and aquatic species; Gary A. Rohrer, USDA-ARS, W047 - Use of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) to Fine-Map Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) in Swine; Curtis P. Van Tassell, USDA-ARS, W055 - Ruminations On Lessons To Be Hatched From Genomics Research In Cattle and Goats. In addition, we'll hear from Jeff Silverstein (USDA-ARS Aquaculture National Program Leader) on cyber-infrastructure initiatives. We'll also hear from our 2013 travel award winners (below) and host a joint poster reception/social with Genome Canada (5:30 PM Saturday). All workshop details are available at (http://www.intlpag.org/). Additional questions about the workshop should be directed to this year's chair, Eric Peatman (peatmer@auburn.edu). The Saturday¡¦s program can be found at http://pag13.mapyourshow.com/5_0/sessions/sessiondetails.cfm?ScheduledSessionID=1E and the Sunday¡¦s program can be found at http://pag13.mapyourshow.com/5_0/sessions/sessiondetails.cfm?ScheduledSessionID=11

Congratulations to our 2013 NRSP-8 Aquaculture Genomics Travel Award recipients: The following are to receive a NRSP-8 Aquaculture Genomics Travel Award, and each travel award recipient will be presenting his/her research in the workshop sessions as well as during our poster reception. o Mackenzie Gavery (Uniiversity of Washington) o Luyang Sun (Auburn University) o Shikai Liu (Auburn University) o Song Lin (Simon Fraser University) o William D. Eisbrenner (Simon Fraser University) o Emily I. Palibroda (Simon Fraser University) o Alejandro P. Gutierrez (Simon Fraser University) o Jianbin Feng (Auburn University) o Jie Hu (Department of Fisheries and Oceans, West Vancouver Lab) o Garrett McKinney (Purdue University)

NRSP-8 Project revision is nearly finished. A special thanks goes out to Tom Porter of the University of Maryland for his chairing this undertaking and a number of others including Milt Thomas, James Mickelson, Stephen White, Eric Peatman, Daniel Ciobanu, Cathy Ernst, Kristi Cammack, Jamie MacLeod, Moh Salem, Jerry Dodgson, Hans Cheng, James Reecy, Noelle Cockett, Ernie Bailey, Caird Rexroad, John Liu, Max Rothschild and Juan Medrano for their work on writing and revising the proposal.

A position for a Ph.D. candidate/Postdoctoral fellow is available at the Institute of Animal Science, Agricultural Research Organization in Israel for integrative genomic analysis of the key genes and regulatory elements affecting early onset of sex determination in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Knowledge in computational genomics is required. Please contact with CV.
