The Head develops a vision for the department in this regard. The person selected will represent the department within the University, the State, nationally, and internationally with clientele groups, funding sources, Extension audiences and professional organizations. Duties include budgetary and personnel management along with professional development related to the faculty, staff, and students in a cross-disciplinary environment. The department head helps create and foster partnerships across campus and with other universities. Qualifications: Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. degree in an appropriate animal science or related field and be eligible for tenure at the rank of professor. The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong record of scholarly achievement in research and educational excellence. Superior communication and outreach skills and a commitment to diversity are essential. Candidates should have leadership and administrative abilities, appreciation for the diverse interests and technical missions of the department, and a commitment to the land grant philosophy. Interest and experience in international activities are highly desirable. Maintaining an extramurally funded research program is encouraged. The Department: Housed in Lilly Hall of Life Sciences, Smith Hall and Poultry Science Building, the department consists of 38 faculty, 33 professional staff, 65 graduate students and post-doctoral associates, and 38 clerical and service staff. Animal Sciences is the largest department in the College of Agriculture with about 635 students in the undergraduate program. Both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered. The current departmental budget is in excess of $13.1 million per year with $5.9 million for on-campus department funds, $5.0 million in research center funds and $2.2 million in extramural support. Animal research and teaching facilities for aquaculture, beef, dairy, poultry, swine and sheep are located 11 miles from campus. Research and educational activities are also conducted at three additional outlying Purdue Agricultural Centers. The department has an abattoir and meats laboratory as well as domestic animal and model species facilities located on campus. The Animal Sciences faculty has internationally recognized basic and applied research programs. Basic research programs that have applications in both biomedical and animal agriculture areas include behavior, developmental biology, genomics and nutrition. Applied research programs that include genetics, environmental impact, nutrient management and physiology are integrated with Extension programs. The USDA-ARS Livestock Behavior Research Unit is closely affiliated with the department.
