The goal of this program is to obtain a working draft sequence (approximately three-fold sequence coverage) of 90 percent of the porcine genome. The outcome of draft sequencing projects is expected to include generation of high quality sequence data, organization of the sequence reads into contiguous sequences (contigs), draft assembly of the sequence, and deposition of all information into a publicly accessible, preexisting database. Letters of intent to apply to this program are requested by July 18, 2005. Please send letters of intent to Dr. Deb Hamernik (dhamernik@csrees.usda.gov). Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) on August 18, 2005. The entire request for applications is available at: http://www.csrees.usda.gov/fo/porcinegenomesequencingnri.html The amount of available support for this program in FY2005 is $5 million. An additional $5 million in support of this program is anticipated in FY2006. In FY2005, CSREES plans to make standard grants to grantees who have requested funding for one year and continuation grants for an initial project period of one year to grantees who have requested funding for two years. CSREES does not plan to solicit new applications for this program in FY2006. The following entities are eligible to apply for and receive a competitive grant, except where otherwise prohibited by law: (1) State agricultural experiment stations; (2) all colleges and universities; (3) other research institutions and organizations; (4) Federal agencies; (5) national laboratories; (6) private organizations or corporations; and (7) individuals. Unsolicited applications will not be considered and applications from scientists at non-United States organizations will not be accepted.
